Negative Calorie Foods -How To Use Them To Lose Weight

By: Ann Huz

Before we begin, you should realise that every time the term "negative calorie foods" is stated, it just implies a class of food that requires more calories to digest than the food actually contains within it.

Lets use water for illustration purposes. Water doesn't have calories. When drinking cold water, the body actually has to expend a certain amount of energy to warm it up to body temperature. So the cold water is considered a negative calorie food because your body burns up a couple of calories when you drink it.

On a side note, anorexics tend to find negative calorie foods attractive to their goals of keeping slim. Unfortunately, a diet consisting mainly of negative calorie foods will result in nutritional deficiencies and eventually starvation. This is because most of the calories expended come from muscle tissue.

A better way of using negative calorie foods is as part of a fasting or detox program. You can do this for a period of one to three days to flush your system. For example, after Christmas season or after you have eaten an overly rich diet. But it is recommended to get medical advice before trying to attempt such a program.

If you may be thinking that you want to start a negative calorie fasting or detox programme, you must pay attention to these areas:

1. Do not eat too much of only one kind of food. Foods may contain substances that although natural, can be harmful when taken excessively. For example, too much of the acid contained in pineapple and grapefruit can harm your stomach lining. And other foods may cause diarrhea. Hence, if possible, eat a combination of the different negative calorie foods.

2. To avoid bloating and getting sick, you shouldn't eat throughout the entire day. Having 4 or up to 5 salad meals at different times of the day should be enough. Then, do not over burden your digestive system and just leave it to rest.

3. Eat slowly and make sure to thoroughly chew your food. This actually releases enzymes and you end up using more calories by doing so. So if the negative calorie foods can just be taken raw such as carrots and tomatoes, it would indeed have more benefits than cooking them.

4. Start your detox program when you'll be free of any sort of major commitments. This is important because you could have fatigue, irritability, and headaches during your fasting period. And if any of the symptoms worsen, discontinue the detox program and go visit a doctor.

5. Once your detox ends, make sure you return very gradually to your normal eating pattern.

Having considered the details explained above, below is a listing of 20 negative calorie foods for you to consider.

* Apples
* Blueberries
* Broccoli
* Cantaloupes
* Carrot
* Cauliflower
* Celery stalk
* Cranberries
* Cucumbers
* Grapefruit
* Green beans
* Green cabbage
* Lettuce
* Papayas
* Pineapples
* Prunes
* Raspberries
* Spinach
* Strawberries
* Tomatoes

Again, it is advisable too see a medical professional before using negative calorie foods as part of a detox program.
